NHL Trade Recap

There was a lot of anticipation/excitement (depending on who you cheer for), leading up to the expansion draft trade/waiver freeze that happened on July 17th.

Here’s a recap of all the trades that took place in the past week.

July 12th

Edmonton Oilers Acquire:Chicago Blackhawks Acquire:
Duncan Keith (D)
Tim Söderlund (F)
Caleb Jones (D)
2022 conditional* third-round pick
*The 2022 third-round pick will become a second if the Oilers make it to the 2022 Stanley Cup Final and if Keith is in the top 4 of ice time during the first three rounds.

Talks of this trade, or one where Keith would end up in the Pacific Northwest or Western Canada, had been happening for a few weeks.

The Oilers also take on Keith’s full salary of $5.5M AAV for the next 2 seasons.

July 14th

Carolina Hurricanes Acquire: Edmonton Oilers Acquire:
Dylan Wells (G)Future Considerations

Future considerations could either mean draft picks at a later date, or no return – the latter of which is more common.

July 15th

New Jersey Devils Acquire:Colorado Avalanche Acquire:
Ryan Graves (D)Mikhail Maltsev (F)
2021 second-round pick

A lot of Avalanche fans knew this trade was coming so that the team could protect 7F-3D for the expansion. They also shed some money off the cap, with 4 main contracts to sign.

July 16th

Detroit Red Wings Acquire:New York Islanders Acquire:
Nick Leddy (D)Richard Panik (F)
2021 second-round pick

The Islanders shed Leddy’s $5.5M AAV and only take on half of Panik’s original salary as the Red Wings retained half.

July 17th aka Deadline Day

Arizona Coyotes Acquire:San Jose Sharks Acquire:
Josef Kořenář (G)
2022 second-round pick
Adin Hill (G)
2022 seventh-round pick

Kořenář was a necessary return in this trade so that the Coyotes would meet the exposure requirements for the protection list.

Vancouver Canucks Acquire:Dallas Stars Acquire:
Jason Dickinson (F)2021 third-round pick

Dickinson was likely to have been taken by Seattle in the expansion draft, so the Stars at least got some value in return this way.

Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire:Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire:
Jared McCann (F)Filip Hållander (F)
2023 seventh-round pick

The Leafs originally acquired Hållander in the Kasperi Kapanen trade last season, so it’s not that much of a loss if they can keep McCann after the expansion draft.

Philadelphia Flyers Acquire:Nashville Predators Acquire:
Ryan Ellis (D)Philippe Myers (D)
Nolan Patrick (F)
Nashville Predators Acquire:Vegas Golden Knights Acquire:
Cody Glass (F)Nolan Patrick (F)

A fun three-way trade! The Flyers have been looking for a defenceman, and are also rumored to be in the mix for Seth Jones, but do take on Ellis’ $6.25M AAV towards their cap.

Also a great tweet from the Predators:

Vegas Golden Knights Acquire: New York Rangers Acquire:
Brett Howden (F)Nick DeSimone (D)
2022 fourth-round pick*
*This pick originally belonged to the Winnipeg Jets who acquired it in the Carl Dahlström trade last season.

Howden and Patrick are both cheaper forwards if Vegas can negotiate a contract with Patrick.

New York Rangers Acquire: Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire:
Barclay Goodrow (F)2022 seventh-round pick

Since the trade, it’s also been reported that the Rangers are looking to sign Goodrow.

Arizona Coyotes Acquire: New York Islanders Acquire:
Andrew Ladd (F)
2021 second-round pick
2022 conditional* second-round pick
2023 conditional** third-round pick
Future Considerations
* Coyotes get the better of the two 2022 second-round picks
** Coyotes will be guaranteed the pick if Ladd plays one game in the 2022/23 season

*and breath*

Now we sit back and wait for the Seattle Expansion Draft, due to take place on July 21st!
