Meet Maddie Fidler

It’s not every day that you have a chance to meet someone who is as amazing and talented as Maddie Fidler.

Who is Maddie? Maddie is a Jill of all trades. She is a model, singer, and the owner of two online boutiques. She is also the dog mama to a Frenchie named Chanel and girlfriend of Philadelphia Flyers player Nicholas Aube-Kubel.

When I discovered her on social media last year I was blown away by her. It was her kindness and heart that drew me in. Not a lot of people know this about me but I have a severe hearing loss that requires hearing aides. When I saw one of her boutiques donates a small portion of its proceeds to an organization that focuses on hearing loss. I knew instantly that I needed to talk to her.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Maddie and end up adoring her as much as I do! Without further ado, meet Maddie Fidler!

1. How would you describe yourself and what you do?

Firstly, thank you for interviewing me, I am so unbelievably flattered that you’re interested in learning about me and what I do! This is my first interview so bear with me, please!

Hmm, this always seems to be my most difficult question to answer! I’d like to think that I am a driven, passionate & compassionate person and I believe that is shown in what I do! As far as what I do…the list can seem to be never-ending! I am always in the midst of a new project.

My two Small Businesses are what I “do” right now and it has been a huge learning experience for me! I’m the owner of Earrings For Hearing Co. and, more recently, MadDog Boutique! Last July I launched Earrings For Hearing and I am still amazed at the response!

For those who haven’t heard of my business, I design and make earrings and then donate 15% of proceeds to an organization known as The Hearing Loss Association of America.

MadDog Boutique is my second endeavor! This year, my two businesses will merge, and Earrings For Hearing will be offered through MadDog Boutique, and I am so excited! MadDog is an online (but hopefully a physical location one day!) accessories boutique for people, pets and homes. When thinking of the perfect name for this boutique, MadDog just came naturally! This is my oh-so-endearing nickname given to me by my sweet boyfriend and the pup featured in the logo is my furry little “assistant” Chanel! This shop has been in the works since October 2020 and while most of our exciting releases will happen around October 2021 with our “grand opening” we are doing monthly “micro-launches” leading up to the Holiday Season!

2. As someone who has a hearing loss, I was wondering who or what inspired you to start your shop Earrings for hearing? Why did you choose to donate 15% of the proceeds to the Hearing Loss Association?

I was inspired to raise funds and awareness for hearing loss because I have a few family members who have hearing impairments or are at risk of developing them! My great uncle had a cochlear implant surgery two winters ago and the many ways it changed his life are almost indescribable! Another passion of mine is music and I’ve been singing and playing instruments since I was young. After speaking with him and realizing just how long it had been since he had actually heard music moved me straight to tears. I chose The Hearing Loss Association of America because this organization aims to open up the world of communication by providing resources and assistance to individuals of ALL ages who are hearing impaired across the United States.

3. Were you a hockey fan prior to dating Nic? If so, who was your favorite team.

I enjoyed hockey growing up because my brother played! I can’t say I was a diehard fan for any specific team though because I grew up heavily involved in the arts. Every night I was participating in hours of dance classes or had voice/music lessons and then would work on my homework after. Although, my brother has always been a Penguins fan which can make for some funny back and forth between him and Nic. For Christmas morning, Gavin wore penguins-themed pajamas as we all were exchanging gifts! Deep down though, he is always cheering for Nicolas.

4. What does an average day look like for you? I’m sure between your various projects and Nic’s hockey it can be a little hectic at times.

My day definitely varies! Right now my mornings usually start when Nic leaves for practice. I can’t function properly without coffee so that’s first on the to-do list! Then depending on the day I either am designing, making products, building/updating my websites, product shoots, the occasional agency photoshoot, designing web campaigns, and packing & shipping orders. I do this all from a tiny “office” which is just a corner outside our bedroom, so definitely not  as glamorous as it sounds! Now that the weather is getting a bit nicer, Chanel has been looking forward to daily walks again and time at the dog park!

5. What has been your favorite hockey memory with Nic so far?

There are so many! I think my favorite has to be watching him score his first NHL goal. It was right before Christmas and I was so excited for him as he had just been called up not long before! My parents actually came to this game and I believe my cheers could have possibly been heard across the arena but no shame in that cheering game! It was so  incredible  and the very next day we flew to Quebec to spend Christmas with his family so it was very special timing for his first goal. But then again there was that one  time in the playoffs where he scored the first two goals of the game and that was pretty awesome too.

6. Covid has affected the sporting world a lot – seasons have been changed, shortened or canceled while some leagues have been moved to bubbles and hub cities. How has it affected you and your boyfriend over the past year?

The worst thing was the distance. We’ve dealt with a lot of long-distance so it’s not necessarily too difficult (thank you, FaceTime!) but it’s definitely not fun! He went home in March 2020 based on suggestions made by the league since no one knew when things would pick up and it’s scary for him to have to wonder and worry about his family from another country. So he was away for 4 months and came back in June for practices but left again  in July for playoffs! There were a lot of virtual movie nights and virtual  dinner dates. There were a few times I felt myself wishing he was home because it was a short few weeks together but I was so excited and proud of him. I know how lucky I am to get to watch him live his dream firsthand so that always makes the distance easier. But the best feeling ever is being reunited.

7. What’s been your favorite part about being a hockey girlfriend? What’s your least favorite?

I sort of mentioned this in the question above, but my favorite part is getting to support him while he lives his dream. When you love someone, all you ever want is to see them happy and there is nothing like getting to watch your best friend and biggest love live their dream! I’ve watched him put in so much hard work and time and now to be able to support him and to witness him have this incredible experience is definitely the best part. I’m not sure I have a least favorite! I wouldn’t trade our experiences together for the world! So instead I’m going to pick a second favorite, which is when people notice me at games and say hi! I’ve made so many friends in the past season that I would see/sit with at games and get to chat with on social media! It’s amazing how many people come out to support this organization and getting to know them is another one of my absolute favorite things!

8. What is the best advice you can give to those looking to do something creative like you do with your shops, modeling, singing and other projects?

The advice I got and will give though it sounds cliché is, don’t worry about what anyone else says, do what makes you happy! There will always be a lot of misconceptions around those who pursue artistic ventures. So let me just clarify the ones I see most. Opening up/running a business doesn’t make you greedy, it makes you innovative! Working with a modeling agency (or modeling for fun!!) doesn’t mean you think you’re the best there is, it means that you work hard to accept yourself just like everyone else does and you’re proud of yourself for doing so! (as you should be) Singing & writing music and sharing it doesn’t mean we think we’re going to be the “next Taylor Swift” (but I wouldn’t complain!) it just means you express yourself musically and sometimes it’s just easier to say things that way! Whatever you are passionate about, pursue it! You know what they say, “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Although lately I’ve been preferring the updated version which is “do what you love and you’ll work harder than ever before.” If you ever need someone to cheer you on as you pursue your passion, don’t hesitate to tell me about it!

9. What’s coming up next for you professionally?

That’s a great question honestly, and I wish I could say but the truth is, I’m not 100% sure! What I do know is that I am in love with all of the fun things happening for MadDog Boutique this year, and that I will continue to design and create Earrings For Hearing! I hope that when restrictions start to lift I can teach yoga again because I miss that so much! And I’d love for live music to pick up again because pre-pandemic I loved playing for local restaurants back home and would love to be able to do that here in Philly!

10. What are five things you are currently loving?

These have zero relation to each other but my five random favorite things right now are:

1. Watching Schitt’s Creek with Nic

2. Starbucks brand Caramel Macchiato Non-Dairy Almondmilk & Oatmilk creamer for my coffee. It’s a lot to say but don’t knock it ‘til you try it!

3. Panorama Wine Bar.. I know everyone loves it but it’s incredible and of all the things I love their focaccia bread so much (because.. ya know.. carbs) and their  service is unmatched! The kindest people hands down & a wonderful restaurant  to be supporting right now!

4. The vinyl record player I got for Nicolas for Christmas.. I think I use it more but I swear it wasn’t a gift for me!

5. The Wellerman/Sea Shanty remix from TikTok… if you know, you know.

11. Where can we find you online? Any social media handles or any initiatives you would like to support / promote?

My personal social media handles are @maddiefidler on instagram and @madsfids on twitter!

My business accounts are @earringsforhearing and @maddogboutique on instagram and if you’re interested you can learn more about The Hearing Loss Association of America at @hearinglossassociation on instagram or at
